Primarily arable farmers, our farming had always come first. The composting business had been an appendage that fitted around farming as a separate enterprise. In 2001 the family had a long hard look at the farming and composting business and decided they had to go one way or the other. It was decided that because in modern farming terms the farm was small (Approx 400 acres) it made sense to employ a contractor to farm the land and concentrate on the composting business. The result was Cumberlow Compost Services was no longer a part time exercise but a full time occupation and now employs 3 full time and 2 part time staff. As pioneers in the green waste business, our experiences have enabled us to help others who came for advice and we have been invited by county councils to talk to groups of farmers interested in this form of diversification. We have been on local radio and local newspapers have featured articles about our site. In the last 12 months we have donated our product to charitable gardening projects, sponsored several roundabouts and we provide conducted tours to members of the public and organisations by prior arrangement.
